What an at-home hormone test can — and can't — tell you
A hormone level is a snapshot of a moving system. In the 40–60 window, that system is changing fast: estradiol and progesterone swing widely through perimenopause, and testosterone in men drifts down gradually rather than falling off a cliff. That has two consequences worth internalizing before you buy anything.
First, one number on one day is weak evidence. The North American Menopause Society and most clinical guidance are explicit that menopause is diagnosed clinically — by age and the pattern of symptoms — not by a single FSH reading. An at-home test is a useful input to that conversation, not a verdict. Second, method matters more than brand. Blood is the reference standard. Urine and saliva are convenient and good for tracking change over time, but they're more variable, which is why we weight method heavily in the ranking below.
